Embark on an unforgettable kayaking adventure near Orlando, where you'll glide through serene waters under expert guidance as you learn the basics of paddling, safety, and what to anticipate during your mesmerizing tour. As dusk envelops the environment, your group will search for the exciting spectacle of bioluminescence, where the darker the night, the more vibrant the glow, illuminating the water like a galaxy beneath the sea. Keep an eye out for gentle manatees and other fascinating marine life that may grace your journey with their presence. If the winds are favorable, you may be whisked away to an island, offering a perfect spot for a refreshing swim under the starlit sky. For a truly celestial experience, plan your visit to coincide with a rocket launch, adding an awe-inspiring highlight to your magical evening on the water.
The source of our “living lights”—bioluminescence—is dinoflagellates, single-celled organisms common in marine environments. Each bioluminescent dinoflagellate flashes for only a fraction of a second when disturbed by water movement. Still, their high concentrations in the warm Indian River water create beautiful bluish-white trails of light caused by swimming fish and paddling kayakers. A swimming manatee may be completely concealed in a spectacular, other-worldly cloud of living light!
Upon arriving at the location, park your car, and check in with the trip leaders. You are then outfitted with a life jacket, kayak, and paddle. After some brief instruction, we paddle as a group in search of the living lights. Most tours last 90 minutes. However, if the bioluminescence is super bright and dolphins or manatees show up on the scene, well… time just doesn’t matter.
